The Syrian government and its sprawling security apparatus stand accused of a litany of human rights violations. The Syrian secret police—or mukhabara in Arabic—has detained tens of thousands of activists, journalists and dissenters since the uprising began in 2011. An estimated 80,000 Syriansremain in detention to this day. Many have simply disappeared. However, there are signs that the Syrian security apparatus may be using its long arm to conduct repression outside Syria as well. "Syria Direct" investigates.
